Most Shocking TV Moment: Australia’s Next Top Model Fiasco

One of the most shocking moments on reality TV this year had to be Sarah Murdoch announcing the wrong winner of Australia’s Next Top Model. We’d been following the competition all season and knew it was going to be a close call between eventual winner Amanda Ware and Kelsey Martinovich. In the end, everyone was a winner with both girls getting $25,000, a trip to New York and a Harper's BAZAAR cover.

Hmm. So when Sarah Murdoch accidentally announced Kelsey Martinovich as the winner of Australia’s Next Top Model, even though the actual winner was Amanda Ware, she claimed on live TV that the information had been “fed to me wrong.” While Sarah has been unavailable for comment today, Foxtel’s director of publicity Jamie Campbell contradicted her statement when he appeared on Sky News this morning. While he admitted that there had been miscommunication between Sarah on stage and the directors in the control room at the back of Luna Park, he denied she had been given the wrong information through her earpiece.

Australia’s Next Top Model Finale: Sarah Murdoch Speaks Out

She held her silence for most of yesterday, but last night Sarah Murdoch—along with finalists Amanda Ware and Kelsey Martinovich—gave an exclusive interview to A Current Affair to give her side of what happened at the Australia’s Next Top Model live finale, when she mistakenly announced Kelsey as the winner before correcting herself and saying it was actually Amanda. The incident has made headlines worldwide, and while she was on live TV Sarah said the information had been “fed to me wrong.” Then Foxtel’s publicity director Jamie Campbell said it was miscommunication, a sentiment Sarah echoed on ACA. When Karl Stefanovic asked Sarah what she heard through her earpiece, she admitted that at the time of the announcement she heard nothing, but that moments before the last thing she had heard was, “Kelsey, one, Amanda, two.” She made a judgement call and announced Kelsey as the winner, only later realising what had happened.

For the first time in six seasons the public will decide who should be Australia’s Next Top Model. Last night the judge’s couldn’t decide whether to eliminate Melbourne Avon lady Sophie Van Den Akker or short stack Sydney girl Kelsey Martinovich—so they let them both stay. They join Gold Coast student Amanda Ware as the top three finalists.
